OCD-OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER.A mental problem that can change the lives of those who love you.It will control your life if you let it.It complicates the lives of those around you,they do not always understand why you have to check the locks twelve times before you can leave the house or why germs are such a major importance in your everyday activities.
I do not have OCD but my son does. He is twenty one years old now and has most of his habits under control.He was fourteen before he was diagnosed.We knew something wasn't quite right when at the age of two he insisted on wearing a pair of suspenders on his pants twenty four hours a day. I put them on him one day while dressing him for a special occasion. I thought they looked cute-he felt they were necessary from that day until about six months later when they finally broke. I pretended they were the only pair available and by now it was time to give them up. At two and a half he believed me and fell into the routine of coming to me every five minutes to pull up his pants. In time,this too was given up by him. His little habits increased as he got older but they were nothing to be worried about.Just fussy things like brushing off a chair before he sat on it or making sure his hair wasn't sticking up.We thought he was just more particular than normal-no big deal right? Again,as he got older the symptoms grew worse,temper increased and self abuse became a problem. After several trips to the family doctor he was diagnosed and now his life is as normal as can be expected as long as he takes his medication. If anyone out there has a child with some of these symptoms be sure to get the child tested.The right medication will give your baby a much more meaningful life and let t good things shine through. |
